The Frozen Academy (FA) was established on June 29, 2007 in Larroque, France. Its founding members, Kenneth G. Hay and Josef Danek, originally intended it as a slightly comic challenge to the Dean of FaVU (Faculty of Visual Arts) Brno Polytechnic University, who had shortly before announced his intention to 'freeze' the Studio of Experimental Drawing there. Freezing, is after all, a way to keep things fresh, and enables nourishing things to be transported easily to be defrosted somewhere else...Since December 2007, when the Studio of Drawing/Painting at FaVU was officially abolished, FA has created an unofficial space for the continuation of studio work by the group and its friends, either in person or as 'remote operators' via the internet and communciations media.
Its first action took place in the Department of Macromolecular Chemistry, Prague in November 2007. This was followed shortly afterwards with the exhibition SIGNAL 07 in the Galerie premArt, Berlin in December 2007.
In the coming months, however, the form of the Frozen Academy gradually changed. FA formed itself into a free association of students, graduate students and trainees of the "frozen" studio.
The FA currently continues to implement these collaborative exhibition projects and works with new partners.
